How to Go About Unlocking the Secrets of Feng Shui

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese custom of orienting buildings and other structures for the proper flow of energy. Increasing the flow of positive energy 'chi' or 'qi' is the principal object of this art. There are many different styles of practice today but the ultimate goal in unlocking the secrets of feng shui remains the same which is aligning the space with chi. It is currently enjoying a lot of popularity throughout the world.

Feng shui is Chinese for wind and water, though it is hardly ever used in that sense. It is the study of the interaction between the various elements and the flow of energy. The yin and yang are the two opposing kinds of energy that try to overpower a space. The aim of the science is to make sure that the positive energy 'chi' is dominantly present.

Some scholars believe that feng shui practiced with a compass may be quite accurate in predicting the state of the environment. When used to align buildings and big structures, the ancient practitioners might have been orienting the building according to magnetic fields and hence probably achieved the miraculous effects. Even so, more often than not, it is impossible to build our houses according to the principles of feng shui. And sometimes the ideal alignment may involve knocking of a couple of walls or altering the functionality of a room. Not everybody may have the luxury to follow through. But, a few tips can be followed to avoid stagnant negative energy and to keep the chi flowing.

It is the thumb rule of feng shui to have ample ventilation and a constant access to fresh air. Most rooms have to be bright either with natural or artificial lights to have good chi. The colour of paint on the walls also account for the energy of the house and its occupants. Lighter hues make the rooms look airy.

For the living room, the rules are simple. Keep it well-lit and naturally airy. Place the couch facing the door. If that is definitely not possible, place it in such a way that the main door is visible from the seat. Never, ever, face away from the door while you are seated. Use a couple of mirrors and lamps if you want to brighten any corners.

For the bedroom, soft, dim lighting should be used. A good bedroom must balance excitement and peace. The bed should have a sturdy headboard to give stability and protection while asleep. When lying down, you must not face a mirror. Neither should your headboard be made of mirror.

Avoid having a television, treadmill or other heavy electronic equipment in the bedroom. It creates negative energy that jars with the chi. Avoid storing anything at all below the bed to promote chi flow. Place the bed in such a way that it is not up against a wall on the sides or the bottom and make sure the bedroom door is visible from the bed. This promotes a sense of space and well-being.

The basic rule is to avoid clutter at all cost. Clutter stagnates chi energy. But, like all other sciences, feng shui should be applied properly and used with a sprinkling of common sense to have any tangible effects.
